Partnered with Bryony House, a transition house for women and children who experience family and intimate partner violence. This partnership resulted in an outreach service providing women going through the criminal justice system with support and advocacy. Funded by the Provincial Department of Justice.
Avalon Sexual Assault Centre received funding from the Canadian Women’s Foundation to develop a Youth Peer Violence Prevention Project. Based in the principles of peer education, Avalon hired a youth coordinator to work jointly with the Coordinator of Community Education to develop a project designed by youth for youth.
The program demonstrated how service providers and youth could work together to identify and address sexual violence issues for youth in a way that youth can relate to. In 1999, the Junior League of Halifax provided a donation to subsidize a training conference for peer educators and adult facilitators.
Our first workshop for “Partners of Survivors” was offered.
In partnership with the IWK Grace Health Centre, Avalon began offering Information Sessions for Non-Offending Parents.
The Community Education Program was revised in order to meet the increased demand for professional training. As a result of the organizational restructuring, there was no longer a Coordinator of Volunteer Services. This now fell under Community Education. Policies, procedures, and protocols for staff and volunteers were developed and the volunteer program was revamped.
This was to address the changing needs of Avalon Centre in relation to use of volunteers in the programming.
