Join Avalon Sexual Assault Centre in declaring May 2011
Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)

The campaign theme this year is It's Time...To Get !nvolved: Engaging Bystanders in Sexual Violence Prevention. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Centre (NSVRC), the 2011 Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign focuses on everyone speaking up to prevent sexual violence in our neighborhoods, communities, workplaces and schools as well as offering individuals viable, responsible ways to intervene.

This primary prevention approach helps to create environments where people are safe in their relationships, families, neighborhoods, schools, work places and communities (additional info and resources can be found here). The Avalon Sexual Assault Centre website provides SAAM resources and events being held in HRM during May. Check www.avaloncentre.ca For educational resources, information about upcoming events, and ways that you, your school, workplace, and community can get involved in SAAM.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:
Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2011

Over the past two years, May has been chosen to mark Sexual Assault Awareness Month in HRM and community partners Avalon Sexual Assault Centre and the NS Advisory Council on the Status of Women have led municipal and provincial governments as well as the greater community in taking notice of the issue of sexual assault and the need for greater awareness and action.

This year, in an effort to support continued work to stop sexual assault and to raise the profile of this issue in our community, 2011 Sexual Assault Awareness Month in HRM will be organized by a group of concerned citizens, in partnership with Avalon Centre and other agencies and services that have a hand in addressing this issue. In order to make this possible, we need your help. If you are an individual or organization who has ideas, time and energy to contribute to planning events that promote a stronger message about sexual assault in our community, please show your support by getting involved.

The National Sexual Violence Resource Centre has SAAM resources and information about this year's theme on it's website at www.nsvrc.org/saam.
